Shooting in a bathtub full of water definitely has it's challenges!
From trying to keep her face (fairly) dry, to trying to hold herself in one spot, the beautiful Shiya Zhao was faced with most of them but she did it and we've these stunning pics by Koby to prove it.
Thank you Koby, Shiya and Ryan of Filler Magazine for your patience. It was hard work but well worth the effort!
Probably one of the easiest editorials I've ever worked on. Great photographer, fab styling and a handsome young model. What more can one ask for?

Those that know me well, know I am in love with Quo brushes and even though I have several different lines in my kit, I reach for my Quo's first so you can imagine how thrilled I was to receive this incredible brush set early last week.
Not only are these brushes top quality, but they're stunning as well. Just look at the pearlized, faux marble handles and trust me when I say, my pictures don't do them justice.
Included is a lace brush roll with ribbon and pearl detail - beautiful enough to carry as a clutch!
I'm no girlie girl but have to say, I've really gone gaga over these beauties.
If you still need a stocking stuffer or two, last I checked this set was selling for just under $70 which is a steal considering what many high end brush lines sell theirs for.
For my U.S. friends, I'm sorry to say the Quo Master Brush Set, which includes the following 10 brushes, is available only in Canada exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart :
Can't go wrong with the incredible team of photographer Rayan Ayash, Justin German of Shagg on hair and Cory Ng's styling.
Of course shooting super model Tara Gill next to the handsome Brent C. doesn't hurt either.
Unfortunately, as is always the case with Murphy's Law, the makeup work I'm most proud of was mistakenly credited to talented fellow artist Min Min Ma.
Flare ran a correction (in the very back pages of the next issue) but.. is it wrong that after all these years, I still lament that my name isn't on that last tear?
As a pro artist, I know what I need to do to get the desired look and as I've been known to say, 'I'm not charging by the pound'. Sometimes, less is more.
Sure there are some clients that we have to 'embellish' for but thankfully Flare isn't one of them. In fact, this entire shoot was super laid back. Chris Nicholls, his two man crew, Fashion Director Elizabeth Cabral, our model Naro and I were the only ones on set and we were done in 6 hours.
Now if only ALL shoots could yield such spectacular results for little to no stress!
I love the guy to death but getting images out of him is like pulling teeth!
Regardless, I think of few of these images of Julia are timeless.
Oh to look that beautiful with next to nothin' on!
For this story, Filler Magazine's Creative Director Ryan Johnson had envisioned a shiny bronzed up gal in glowing white clothing. Trouble was, he didn't really think it through when he booked the stunning Autumn with skin like that of a porcelain doll.
No one but the stylist really got that I was unable to fully bronze our model to the extent that the art director wanted because, lets face it, we see bronzed goddesses in Vogue all the time and we know it's body makeup right?
Indeed, but as fab as Filler is, it does not have the budget or clout Vogue does. Few do and exactly who's gonna tell Anna Wintour that the magazine needs to pay for stained samples? Exactly.
Even with the most advanced stay put makeup, there is ALWAYS some transfer. Never the less, we worked it out and the beautiful result is above.

The great hair work here was created by hair guru Justin German of Shagg and shot by one of Canada's top fashion photographers, Chris Nicholls.
Love, love, love the opening hair cut. If I wasn't hidin' so much with my long locks, I'd chop it off to match!;)

This is my second story for Flare Magazine titled 'Prints Charming'. One is chic and urban while the other is fresh and youthful.
In this most recent one, the lovely (and very tall.. 5'11"!) Amanda Laine was photographed by Evaan Kheraj for the May issue.
Editor, Fiona Green
Illustrations, Rachael MecklingHair, Justin German, P1M, ShaggThe previous 'Prints Charming' below, was shot for Flare's June 2005 issue by my good friend John van der Schilden in the early stages of Agneieszka Wichniewicz' modeling career.
Hair, also by Justin German of Shagg and styled by Flare's Fashion Editor, Liz Cabral.
Which do you prefer?
For weeks, I didn't have anything new to post and then all of a sudden BAM!, four editorials out at the same time - 'Spotlight' in Filler and in Flare Magazine, 'Cuts Above', 'Prints Charming' and my fav new beauty story, 'In Bloom'.
It never rains but it pours!
Along with Beauty Editor Kristen Vinakmens, Associate Fashion Editor Fiona Green and Art Director Tanya Watt, here is list of the talent it took to make this shoot happen:
Photography: Zhang Jingna, Suzy Johnston + Associates
Hair: Justin German, Shagg
Nails: Leeanne Colley, Tips Nail Bar
Props: Stephanie Saunders
Models: Meagan Callen & Lily Gao
Makeup: Face Atelier, Mary Kay®, Yaby, MUFE
The beautiful Marla was shot by one of my fav photographers, Rayan Ayash and styled by Nadia Pizzimenti. If you can believe it, these two super talented artists don't even total my age... COMBINED! Sigh.
As beautiful as this story is, this wasn't an easy shoot as we started at 4pm and shot until about 4am. I'm getting kinda long in the tooth for such nocturnal marathons but even I have to admit, it was well worth it.
Art Direction - Ryan Johnson, Filler Magazine
On the heels of my Schön Magazine spread comes this fantastic story featuring the perennially young Maye Musk.
Fashion editor Susie Sheffman was inspired by Miguel Jacob's recent show of portrait photography and knew he would be the perfect shooter to catch these 'moments'. As Maye was up for anything, I had a blast doing her makekup and hair.
Fingers crossed I will age as gracefully as this vibrant, happy and healthy silver haired fox!
Check out my guest post on Janine Falcon's award winning site, BeautyGeeks for the indepth details of what I used on Maye to get this look.
Update: This story is a 'best' in New York Magazine's 'The Best & Worst of May Fashion Magazines'!
Don't you just love how he lit our stunning model, Madeleine Blomberg?
I'll admit it, I actually did a little happy dance. :)
Some would say it's my best hair work to date. All I can tell you is that as far as celebrities go, these two, though a little stiff, were super easy to work with!
Here are a few behind the scenes shots including Barbie 'before' and my 'kit' for the day which included hot glue, pliers and of course, Barbie's purple hair brush!
Produced by Linda Stevenson; Styled by Karen Kwinter
This was my second time working with the lovely Ty. She's a real gem - patient and so, so professional. I used two wigs and several hair pieces to create that nest of hair and she didn't complain once.. not even a peep!
This ambitious Fashion Magazine designer story was shot over two days and required a small army to pull it off.
On day one, we all crammed into a winnie at 6am and headed to the first of four locations - a Taco Bell in the far reaches of Toronto. My job on route - to hack those synthetic pink wigs into a fashionable, albeit messy, bobs.
Our second day was much easier. We had the luxury of shooting in studio and my fab assistants and I had an entire makeup area all to ourselves! Added bonus - craft service table right outside our door!
Makeup & Hair, Diana Carreiro; Photography, Adam Levett; Styling, George Anotonopoulos; Fashion direction, Susie Sheffman; Set designs, Matt Jackson
Fashion assistants, Allison Bouras and Caitlan Moneta; Hair assistant, Cody Alain; Make-up assistant, Cia Saldutto
Sveltlana was amazing to work with and even more incredible to watch in person. I spent the entire day covered in goosebumps. See for yourself just how talented this dancer is!

I knew the new Mary Kay foundations were coming but I had no idea I would receive an invite to the pre-launch in New York city as these are usually reserved for top editors and bloggers.
Like most things Mary Kay, theirs was not a simple paper or e-vite invite. Oh no... my invitation arrived via courier and came in the form of a beautiful black box, tied with a pink satin ribbon and inside, a folder complete with my itinerary (flight and hotel details), a promo book for the Gramercy Park Hotel (!), and a much needed gift of travel sized Mary Kay skin care essentials.
So, on November 9th, after being treated to a lovely lunch at the Maialino Restuarant at the Gramercy, we headed up to the presentation room for the unveiling of the new foundations demonstrated by celebrity artist, Luis Casco, a super nice, incredibly talented man.
As Louis gave us the rundown on the new products and shared his great tips and tricks during the model demos, we were able to colour match our skin from several pre-selected shades at our personalized 'make-up stations'. Check out the video smarty pants Michelle Villett of Beauty Editor posted from the event.
Heres the skinny:
The foundation formulations are Timewise Matte and Timewise Luminous and will be available in 23 shades so matching ones skin will be a snap.
Generally, I don't like the feel of foundation on my face so unless I'm presenting at a media event etc., I don't wear it. But testing and wearing is part of my job so I opted for the Luminous and loved it right away. The foundation is light, velvety smooth and a little goes a long way. My skin instantly looked healthy and smooth. Foundation can do this?? Who knew! ;)
The Timewise Foundation will be available in Canada in February along with a new primer, a foundation brush and concealer brush.
Stay tuned for my next Mary Kay post when these great new foundations are launched in Canada.
